Targets remain secret, NATO approves largest weapons buildup

In response to the threat posed by Russia, NATO has approved the largest arms increase since the Cold War. It foresees a massive expansion of its deterrence and defense capabilities in the coming years, writes A2 CNN. Priority is given to capabilities such as long-range weapons systems, air defense and mobile ground forces. The decision on the program was made at a meeting of the defense ministers of the allied states in Brussels. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described this decision as "historic."
The rearmament program consists of new military capability targets. These specify exactly what each ally should contribute to deterrence and mutual defense in the future. The required capabilities were determined based on the new defense plans. They also take into account the assessment of intelligence agencies that, despite the ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, Russia could be ready for war against a NATO country within just a few years.
The new specific planning objectives are classified as secret in order to make NATO the most unpredictable possible adversary for Russia. However, according to information obtained by DPA, the previously valid military capabilities objectives have been increased by approximately 30 percent.
At a summit later this month, all NATO members are expected to commit to investing at least 3.5 percent of their national gross domestic product (GDP) on defense in the future. An additional 1.5 percent of GDP could then be added for defense-related spending - for example, on infrastructure - so that the five percent target called for by US President Donald Trump can eventually be reached.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday that NATO countries are moving closer to an agreement. "Many countries are already significantly exceeding the two percent threshold. We are very close to a consensus on a five percent commitment to NATO," Hegseth said in Brussels.
