Apocalyptic view in Ibiza, the 'paradise' island is flooded by rivers of rain

Ibiza , the international party and club destination, has been hit by the worst downpour in 70 years.
In less than 24 hours, the island received up to 254 liters of water per square meter, according to the Spanish meteorological agency (AEMET), recording the wettest 24-hour period since 1952. Storm Gabrielle brought large amounts of moisture from the Mediterranean and trapped it over the Balearic Islands, causing roads to turn into rivers and infrastructure to collapse.
Images that have circulated around the world show cars submerged up to their windows, tourists hastily abandoning the main highway to catch their flights on foot and luxury hotels filling with water.
At the historic Pacha, near the marina, part of the roof collapsed, with staff desperately trying to contain the leaks, while Ibiza Airport experienced serious problems with rainwater flowing through the roof.
Authorities were forced to raise the alert from orange to red, while INUNBAL's special flood plan was activated.
Soldiers, police and firefighters arrived from Mallorca and Valencia, along with helicopters and special disaster units. Within 24 hours, the Guardia Civil rescued 148 people who were trapped in homes and vehicles.
In addition to the volume of rain, Spanish media also highlight the inadequacy of infrastructure. Drainage systems were unable to cope with the large volume of water, resulting in flooding of streets and basements within minutes.
The UME (Unidad Militar de Emergencias) itself stressed that the intensity of the rain combined with the inability to drain the water worsened the destruction.
El País notes that warmer seas and increased humidity in the Mediterranean are amplifying phenomena like Storm Gabrielle, which are becoming more frequent in Spain. For this reason, local authorities intend to request that Ibiza be declared a "disaster area".
From a clubbing paradise, the island suddenly found itself battling a flooding nightmare. And as the data shows, it was the combination of extreme weather conditions and the vulnerability of its infrastructure that drowned Ibiza.
