After heavy defeat in local elections, opposition in RMV suffers massive resignations

The heavy defeat suffered in the recent local elections has caused a wave of resignations in the leadership of the largest opposition party in North Macedonia, the Social Democratic League (SDSM).
These resignations were made at the request of the party's chairman, Venko Filipçe. Specifically, the deputy chairman, the four other deputy chairmen, the secretary general, as well as all members of the SDSM Executive Committee have resigned.
The SDSM Central Committee is expected to meet in about two weeks to appoint successors to the officials who left.
This situation comes as a result of the very poor results in the local elections, which has deepened dissatisfaction and internal divisions in the party.
Venko Filipçe has stated that he himself has no intention of resigning from the party leadership and that he will personally take over the process of its revival and renewal.
SDSM is one of the two main political parties in North Macedonia and the main representative of the social democratic and center-left wing in the country. It was founded in 1991 as a successor to the “League of Communists of Macedonia” and, after the dissolution of Yugoslavia, transformed into a modern party with a European orientation.
The party has governed several times since the country's independence. A particularly important period was the government of Zoran Zaev (2017–2022), during which the Prespa Agreement was signed, which led to the change of the constitutional name to "North Macedonia" and paved the way for NATO membership as well as European integration processes.
However, despite the reforms, the SDSM has faced internal conflicts, power consumption, and growing dissatisfaction from voters, which has led to successive electoral losses in recent years.
