The situation in the Persian Gulf escalates, US jets hit two Iranian tankers

The situation in the Persian Gulf has become tense again this Friday, after the US military confirmed that a US fighter jet hit two Iranian-flagged oil tankers that were moving towards a port in Iran.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet fired precision munitions at the smokestacks of two tankers, disabling them before they entered an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman.

In a statement published on the X social network, CENTCOM stressed that the tankers were "violating the ongoing US blockade."

Meanwhile, Iranian media outlet Fars News Agency reported sporadic clashes between American and Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz since 1:00 p.m.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically sensitive points in the world for global oil transport, while tensions between Washington and Tehran have increased significantly in recent weeks.

The event comes at a time when Donald Trump's administration is still awaiting Iran's response to the American proposal for a ceasefire and the start of negotiations to end the conflict in the region.
