"Why aren't you supporting the US against Iran?", Rubio from Rome: We are unhappy with Italy and Spain

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has sharply criticized European allies for not supporting Washington's efforts to confront Iran and guarantee the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
During a statement to the media after meeting in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Rubio said he fails to understand why some European countries are not standing by the US in the crisis with Iran.
"I don't understand why anyone wouldn't be supportive," he declared, adding that allies need to do "more than just strong statements" against Tehran's actions.
Rubio particularly criticized the refusal of some European countries to allow the use of US military bases during recent operations in the region.
"Some countries in Europe, like Spain, denied us the use of bases for a very important occasion. This hindered the mission and created unnecessary risks," he said.
According to the chief of American diplomacy, this situation raises serious questions about the role of allies within NATO and the ability of the US to use its forces deployed in Europe during international crises.
Rubio also spoke about recent incidents in the Persian Gulf, defending the American response to Iranian attacks.
"If you shoot at a US Navy ship, what are we supposed to do? Only stupid countries don't retaliate when they shoot at you, and we are not a stupid country," he declared.
In addition to tensions with Iran, Rubio and Meloni also discussed the war in Ukraine, trade tariffs between the US and the European Union, as well as the issue of Cuba, for which Washington seeks diplomatic and economic isolation.
