French President Emmanuel Macron has warned European leaders that "there is a possibility that the US will betray Ukraine on the issue of territorial integrity, without clarity on security guarantees."
The news was published by the German magazine "Der Spiegel", which cited a recently published phone call between European leaders.
According to the magazine, Macron described the tense moment in the talks as a "big risk" for Zelensky, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz adding that the Ukrainian leader - who also took part in the call - needed to be "very careful".
"They are playing games with you, as well as with us," Friedrich Merz reportedly said, with the magazine concluding that this statement referred to Steve Wittkoff's mission to Moscow.
Even NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who has publicly praised Donald Trump, reportedly declared "that we must protect Volodymyr."
The magazine reported that other leaders also expressed their concerns, with Alexander Stubb from Finland saying "we should not leave Ukraine and Zelensky alone with these people."
Der Spiegel said it spoke to "several" participants in the call who confirmed that it took place, and two of them reportedly said that the excerpts were "accurately reproduced."
Zelensky's spokesman declined to comment, as did Merz's office, while the Elysee disputed the excerpts attributed to Macron.
