US President Donald Trump has commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin's positions, leaving open the possibility that he may have territorial ambitions beyond Ukraine.

“It’s possible,” Trump said when asked at a news conference at the NATO summit in The Hague, adding: “I know one thing, he would like to close this issue. It’s a big mess for him.”

Following the conference, Trump mentioned several international conflicts that, according to him, the US has helped resolve, including tensions between India and Pakistan.

He said the war in Ukraine "should have been over by now," and added that he was surprised by the way the situation had developed.

"I think Putin was ill-advised," Trump said. "I'm really surprised. I thought it would be easily resolved."
