Putin continues to hold ceasefire hostage, orders recruitment of 160,000
Russia has ordered the biggest increase in recruitment since the start of the war in Ukraine, as 160,000 more military personnel have been called up to the front lines.

The planned size of the draft has increased from 150,000 in 2024 and 134,500 in 2022, when Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.

It comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia to increase the size of its military to 1.5 million active-duty soldiers - an increase of about 180,000 troops over three years. The move comes despite growing efforts by the United States to bring about a ceasefire in the three-year conflict, with Putin accused of stalling the peace process.

Despite the Kremlin's claim that those called up are not connected to the war in Ukraine, Kiev has said throughout the conflict that it has taken Russian conscripts captive, and Putin previously admitted that some were sent to fight by mistake.

Russian men have the right to be called up for compulsory military service through conscription twice a year.

In addition to conscription, Russia has recruited hundreds of thousands of men for its offensive in Ukraine as paid contract soldiers, offering high salaries and massive bonuses for enlisting. Russia traditionally holds recruitment waves in the spring and fall, with men aged 18-30 eligible for conscription.
