Cyprus on fire, houses and people burn / Fire engulfs part of the city of Limassol, victims found in a car
Two people have died in a huge fire near Cyprus' second-largest city, Limassol, as authorities say temperatures have reached 44°C and strong winds have spread the flames rapidly.
According to police, the burned bodies of the two victims were found in a car engulfed in flames that broke out on Wednesday afternoon in the village of Malia, in the hills above Limassol.
The Health Ministry said two people were hospitalized with serious burns, while 16 others were treated for minor injuries. Fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis said the fire had spread to 100 square kilometers, with “no more active fronts” but “strong explosions” continuing in various areas.
The government has declared an alert for extreme temperatures, while more than 250 firefighters and 75 vehicles are engaged in efforts to extinguish the flames.
Help has also been sought from neighboring countries - Jordan has made two planes available, while Spain is also expected to send more. Cyprus faces fires every year during hot, dry summers.
In 2021, a fire in the Larnaca region claimed the lives of four Egyptian workers.
