Death toll from protests in Iran rises to 648, over 10,000 protesters arrested

At least 648 protesters have been killed in Iran during anti-government demonstrations, according to Iran Human Rights, a Norway-based human rights group, while almost 10,700 people have been arrested.

The group warns that the death toll could be much higher, but communications outages across the country are making it difficult to verify the information.

The rights group has called for international support to help document human rights abuses and pressure Iranian authorities to stop using force against peaceful protesters. The protests began more than two weeks ago due to a worsening economic situation.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump threatened to intervene in Iran if protesters were killed. Following Trump's comments, Iran's supreme leader accused the US of deception and supporting "treasonous mercenaries."
