US Secretary of State plans to visit Western Balkans, Montenegrin minister

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced a visit to the Western Balkans this year, Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimovic announced on Friday.

Ibrahimovic met with Rubio on the first day of the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO member countries in Brussels.

"A short but substantive conversation on current bilateral and regional topics, which I had with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. We will continue it in Podgorica during his visit to Montenegro and the region, which he announced to me this year ," Ibrahimovic wrote on his X account.

He announced that they exchanged views on bilateral and regional issues, emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue and partnership between Montenegro and the US, especially regarding common security challenges.

"They agreed that [Rubio's] visit would constitute an additional opportunity to advance bilateral cooperation and confirm the strong allied relations between the two countries," the Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

A two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers is being held in Brussels, where, among other things, it will be decided whether member countries will increase defense spending from the current minimum of 2 percent of gross domestic product.

The Trump administration had previously proposed that minimum spending be 5 percent of gross domestic product, while NATO chief Mark Rutte has called for each ally to pledge to spend at least 3.7 percent of gross domestic product on defense as soon as possible.

Rubio called on the 32 member countries of the military alliance on Thursday to pledge to increase spending to strengthen defense capabilities.

Montenegro has been a member of the NATO alliance since 2017./ REL
