US withdraws troops from Lithuania

The United States has begun withdrawing more than 1,000 American soldiers and military equipment from Lithuania after completing a period of rotational deployment, Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reported.
The departing forces are expected to be replaced by a new military contingent, however the timing and size of the new deployment have not yet been confirmed, as Washington is conducting a review of its military presence in Europe.
Several sources from the defense sector in Lithuania confirmed the withdrawal, while some of the information was also confirmed by the president's national security advisor, Deividas Matulionis.
According to the LRT, in recent years, US troop rotations in Lithuania have been almost continuous. After the launch of full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine, the US presence expanded to a near-permanent deployment of about 1,000 or more military personnel and combat equipment.
The report notes that since 2019, the United States has regularly deployed battalion-sized contingents to Lithuania. After the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, this presence expanded significantly.
The development comes at a time when reports are increasing about a possible reduction in the US military presence in Europe.
Earlier, the German daily Welt am Sonntag reported that the United States plans to reduce part of its military presence in Europe faster than NATO had anticipated, without giving allies a significant transition period.
Bloomberg also reported in May that European allies are considering possible scenarios that envision reducing US forces in Italy and Spain.
