Demonstrations "explode" in Turin, protests against the demolition of the Askatasuna social center

Thousands of citizens took to the streets of Turin today to protest against the decision to dismantle the Askatasuna social center, a space known for cultural and political activities in the Vanchiglia neighborhood.
Demonstrators marched with banners and chants of “Askatasuna non si tocca” (“Askatasuna is not touched”), joined by delegations from other Italian cities. The protest began peacefully, but during the day there were tensions with the police, who used water cannons and tear gas to restore control in some areas of the city.
Several police officers were reported injured during clashes with demonstrators, while authorities stated that the law must be enforced and that the right to protest must be separated from violent actions.
The Askatasuna social center has a history of several decades and has been known as a space for alternative culture, social organization and community activities. The decision to dismantle it has prompted strong reactions from citizens and activists who see this action as a blow to the freedom of social organization.
The demonstration in Turin comes at a time when debates over social spaces and their use in Italy have grown, reflecting tensions between authorities and local communities over citizens' rights.
