"Potentially dangerous situations"/ US civil aviation warns of

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a series of warnings to airlines and pilots operating over the airspace of Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Ecuador and parts of South America, urging them to exercise increased caution due to “military activities” and the risk of disruption to satellite navigation systems. The warnings – known as Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) – went into effect on January 16 and will remain in effect for 60 days.

The FAA said the advisories are for specific airspace over Mexico, areas of Panama, Bogota, Guayaquil and regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean, noting that the hazards could affect aircraft at any altitude during flight, arrival or departure. The agency described the situation as “potentially hazardous” to civil air operations.

The warnings come at a time of tension in the region, following increased US military activity in the Caribbean and around Venezuela - including an operation in which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured - and statements by US President Donald Trump about the possibility of military action against drug trafficking in Mexico and other countries.

According to officials, the warning is intended to ensure that airlines are aware of the developing situation and take precautions for the safety of passengers and crews.
