Spain escalates clashes with the US: Closes airspace to American planes, after

Spain has closed its airspace to US aircraft involved in the Iran war, Defense Minister Margarita Robles said on Monday, marking another escalation in the country's opposition to the US-Israeli conflict in the Middle East.

Spain had already said the US could not use jointly operated military bases in the conflict with Iran, which Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has described as illegal, reckless and unjust.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles said on Monday that the same logic applies to the use of Spanish airspace in conflict.

"This was made perfectly clear to the US military and forces from the beginning. Therefore, neither the bases are authorized, and certainly, neither is the use of Spanish airspace authorized for any action related to the war in Iran," Robles told reporters.

Spanish newspaper El Pais first reported the closure of Spanish airspace, citing military sources. Spain's government under Sánchez has been Europe's most vocal opponent of US and Israeli military actions in the Middle East.

When the Spanish government denied the US use of the Rota and Morón military bases in southern Spain, President Donald Trump threatened to cut off trade with Madrid. Sánchez has also been among the most vocal critics of Israel's actions in its war in Gaza.

"I think everyone knows Spain's position; it's very clear," Robles said, calling the war in Iran "deeply illegal and deeply unjust."
