Deadly storm in Greece, 6 months' worth of rainfall in one day causes 2 fatalities

Six months' worth of rainfall fell in less than a day in the Greek capital Athens, which was hit by a deadly storm this week. At least two people died on Wednesday, while emergency crews spent Thursday clearing debris and damage.
Experts said the extreme weather phenomenon brought up to 170 millimeters of rainfall over the capital, 40 percent of the annual amount that usually falls in the capital.
A 56-year-old woman died on Wednesday evening after being swept away by floodwaters and trapped under a car in the hilly Athens neighborhood of Ano Glyfada.
A few hours later, a 53-year-old coast guard was fatally injured by large waves while trying to help local residents secure their boats in the port town of Astros, in the Peloponnese region.
The storm, which was moving east across Greece, brought winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour, forcing authorities in Athens, as well as in the west and south of the country, to close schools.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis canceled a planned trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
