Shooting at Utah Festival in US, three dead

Three people were killed, including an 8-month-old baby, in a shooting at a festival in West Valley City.

Officials with the West Valley City Police Department said five people were shot in Centennial Park Sunday evening. An 18-year-old man, a 41-year-old woman and an 8-month-old infant died from their injuries.

Officials said the shooting happened at 9:20 p.m. during WestFest, an annual city festival, after two groups of people had "a verbal altercation."

Police approached the groups to break up the fight when a 16-year-old suspect pulled out a gun and fired several shots into the other group. An officer returned fire but did not shoot the suspect. The 16-year-old was immediately taken into custody. Police said he is the sole suspect in the incident.

Officials said the 18-year-old man who was killed was in the suspect's opposing group, but the 41-year-old woman and 8-month-old child were bystanders and not connected to the altercation. A 17-year-old and a 15-year-old were shot in the arm. Police do not know at this time whether the teenage victims were involved in the altercation.

A pregnant woman was also injured while trying to climb a fence to leave the scene.
