Tehran continues harsh rhetoric as US awaits response to peace proposal

The war in Iran and the wider Middle East appeared to have entered a waiting phase late on May 9, as Washington awaited Iran's response to its latest peace proposal.

Meanwhile, Tehran, which has yet to issue an official response, continued to maintain its hostile stance towards the US.

Iran's hardline Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reacted angrily to the continued US naval blockade of Iranian ports, threatening that "any attack on Iranian tankers and merchant ships will result in a severe attack on one of the US centers in the region and enemy ships."

This comes a day after US strikes disabled two Iranian-flagged tankers in the Gulf of Oman, which Washington said were trying to breach the blockade of Iranian ports.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on May 9 that its naval blockade "continues to be fully enforced" and that since April 13 it has redirected 58 merchant ships and disabled four others "to prevent vessels from entering or leaving Iranian ports."

Questions for the Iranian leadership

US-Israeli airstrikes launched on February 28 have eliminated a large part of the Iranian leadership, prompting US President Donald Trump to call the regime "disordered" and without clear leadership.

Some observers have said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has increased its power and has opposed more moderate leaders who have sought to reach an agreement with American negotiators.

On May 8, both Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said they were awaiting a response to the latest US offer, which is said to be a one-page memorandum that would end the fighting and open the vital Strait of Hormuz, but leave for later discussion several key issues, including Iran's right to enrich uranium.

But by the early hours of May 10 Middle Eastern time, there was no sign that Tehran had sent its response to the Pakistani mediators or any other public comment, other than a brief statement questioning Washington's seriousness in the talks.

"The recent escalation of tensions by US forces in the Persian Gulf and their numerous actions in violation of the ceasefire have increased doubts about the motivation and seriousness of the American side on the path of diplomacy," Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

Rubio strongly defended recent US military actions in the Persian Gulf and rejected Iranian efforts to regulate navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic sea route through which about a fifth of global oil and gas supplies pass.

"Iran now claims that it owns, that it has the right to control, an international waterway... This is something unacceptable that they are trying to normalize," Rubio said, following reports that Tehran had created an agency to approve the passage of ships through the strait. /REL
