Extreme temperatures, a serious threat to public health in Europe

Extreme temperatures are becoming one of the most serious threats to public health in Europe. According to the World Health Organization, more than 200,000 people have died from heat-related causes in the past four years, with most of these deaths considered preventable.

WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Henri P. Kluge, described extreme heat as one of the most immediate and deadly consequences of climate change.

According to him, heat waves are no longer isolated phenomena, but are becoming a recurring crisis that puts great pressure on health systems, infrastructure and public services.

The WHO has called on European governments to strengthen protective measures for citizens, drawing up specific action plans against heat. These measures include the creation of cooling centers in cities, increasing green spaces, protecting the elderly and most vulnerable groups, and adjusting working hours on days with high temperatures.

According to the organization, Europe is warming faster than many other regions of the world. The combination of an aging population, urbanization and rising temperatures is significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illness and death.

WHO emphasizes that preventive measures can save thousands of lives each year and has set as a long-term goal the reduction to a minimum of deaths related to extreme temperatures through the cooperation of institutions and the implementation of climate change adaptation policies.
