Authorities in Italy are conducting a homicide investigation after the death of a 20-year-old woman with a milk allergy in tiramisu, which was served to her as "vegan" even though it contained milk.
The unfortunate girl, named Anna Bellisario, and her friend had lunch at a restaurant in Milan on January 26, 2023, but ten days later she died of anaphylactic shock at San Raffaele Hospital. According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the police are investigating the murder of a mother and her daughter, who were in charge of the confectionery factory that supplied sweets to the fast food restaurant. Based on preliminary findings, the two women confused receipts for vegan desserts with others containing milk.
The company allegedly did not prevent the mixing of the two production lines at the patisserie, which at the time supplied 63 restaurants with vegan tiramisu. Prosecutors, based on information from the wiretapped conversations, said that if the separation of ingredients had been respected, the vegan sweets were produced in a separate area from the rest and the staff had received the proper training rather than a four-hour briefing, the caseins would not have been mixed with plant-based products in the confectionery laboratory, which led to the death of the 20-year-old.
When ordering the vegan tiramisu, the girl checked the menu, but also asked for additional information about the dessert because of her allergy. However, after the assurances she received she began to eat it.
With her second spoonful of tiramisu, Anna Bellisario ran to the fast food restaurant's restroom to try to vomit it out. She took asthma medicine and cortisone, which she always carried with her, but shortly afterwards she lost consciousness and on February 5 she breathed her last in hospital. The girl suffered from a milk allergy since birth.
Italian authorities found traces of milk proteins in other packages of tiramisu of the same brand. But in addition, traces of eggs were also found in the mayonnaise that contained the vegan sandwich that the girl ate that fateful day at the restaurant.
The Italian Ministry of Health recalled the product Tiramisu Mascherpa from the market on February 6, 2023, due to the possibility that it contained milk protein, which was not indicated on the label.
