Riots in Los Angeles/ Trump sends 2,000 National Guard members after violent

US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles, following riots that erupted during protests against mass arrests of illegal immigrants.

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, called the decision "intentionally inflammatory."

Making a play on Newsom's last name, which he called Newscum (loosely translated: young scum/scum), President Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social platform:  "If California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass cannot do their jobs - and everyone knows they cannot - then the federal government will step in and solve the problem of rioting and looting the way it should be solved."

More than 40 people were arrested in Los Angeles on Saturday for resisting members of the federal immigration agency (ICE), which has been scouring the US for weeks to identify and arrest illegal immigrants as part of an operation ordered by President Donald Trump.

"There have already been several arrests for obstructing our operations,"  FBI Deputy Director Dan Bonzino wrote in a post on the X platform.  "There will be several more.

"We are reviewing the videos to identify the perpetrators. You bring the chaos, we bring the handcuffs ," he added.

ICE officers gathered this morning in the Paramount suburb, where many members of the Hispanic community live, near a Home Depot store, where unskilled workers typically demand daily wages by offering their services.

It is not clear whether the ICE agents were preparing to arrest illegal immigrants or gathered there to prepare for an operation.

When their presence was noticed, tensions escalated and the sheriff's office said it had sent police to restore order.

Protesters threw objects at officers and tried to block a bus from leaving the area. Police repelled the gathering crowd with tear gas and stun grenades.

Hours later, the streets were filled with trash and overturned shopping carts, as seen in footage broadcast by television networks, which also reported that some protesters set fire to an American flag.

At the same time, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that the Pentagon was ready to mobilize Marines "if violence continues" in Los Angeles.

"The Department of Defense is immediately activating the National Guard to support federal law enforcement in Los Angeles.

"If the violence continues, active duty Marines from Pendleton will also be deployed - they are on heightened alert," Hegseth wrote in a post on Platform X.

Similar incidents occurred on Friday in Los Angeles, where protesters threw eggs at ICE vehicles after agents arrested undocumented immigrants.

Images posted to Platform X on Saturday by Border Patrol agent Michael Banks and shared by Stephen Miller, an adviser to President Donald Trump, show dozens of heavily armed agents in military uniforms confronting protesters.

Commenting on the incidents, Steven Miller spoke of a "revolt" against the rule of law and US national sovereignty.
