Trump to review billions in funding for Harvard, accuses university of allowing anti-Semitism

The Trump administration said Monday it is reviewing about $9 billion in federal grants and contracts awarded to Harvard University, accusing the school of allowing anti-Semitism to spread on its campus, according to a report in the New York Times.
In a statement on Monday, the Trump administration said it was considering about $256 million in contracts, as well as another $8.7 billion in what it described as "multi-year grant commitments."
“While Harvard’s recent actions to curb institutionalized antisemitism – albeit long overdue – are welcome, there is much more the university must do to preserve its privilege to receive taxpayer dollars,” Josh Gruenbaum, a senior official at the General Services Administration, said in a statement.
“This administration has shown that we will take immediate action to hold institutions accountable if they allow anti-Semitism to fester,” he added. “We will not hesitate to act if Harvard does not do so.”
The threatened action against Harvard followed a decision, made public on March 7, to cut about $400 million in funding to Columbia “due to the school’s continued inaction in the face of ongoing harassment of Jewish students.” Desperate to resume funding, Columbia agreed two weeks later to meet the conditions demanded by the administration, a step toward recovering the money.
In February, Harvard was included on a list of 10 universities, including Columbia, under scrutiny by an anti-Semitism task force formed by the Trump administration, which said it planned to visit the universities.
Columbia was the epicenter of anti-Israel protests that erupted on many American college campuses following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack inside Israel and Israel's subsequent war in Gaza.
“Harvard has served as a symbol of the American dream for generations – the ultimate aspiration of students around the world to work hard and enter the prestigious institution,” said Education Secretary Linda McMahon. “Harvard’s failure to protect students on campus from anti-Semitic discrimination – all while promoting divisive ideologies against free inquiry – has put its reputation at serious risk,” he added.
