World leaders meet at the Munich Security Conference

The presidents of Ukraine and the United States have expressed willingness to reach an agreement as world leaders gather this week for the annual Munich Security Conference. As VOA correspondent Arash Arabasadi reports, the Munich meeting is being held to discuss, among other things, the future of Kiev's security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently showed reporters a previously secret map showing the location of his country's rare minerals.
"These deposits are extremely valuable... they are worth a lot. That's why we have to protect them. That's what the Americans want. If they want us to make a deal, then let's make a deal," says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
US President Donald Trump says he is open to negotiations.
"We want to make a deal with Ukraine. They will provide what we are giving them in exchange for rare minerals and other items," says President Trump.
The President's National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, over the weekend echoed the president's demand to continue American aid to Ukraine in exchange for the country's natural resources.
Rare earth minerals are important for the production of electric motors and communications equipment.
President Zelensky says that about 20 percent of Ukraine's resources are in parts of the country that have been occupied by Russian forces.
He calls Ukraine's Dnipro region "very rich" and warns that if Russia controls those mineral deposits, Moscow could send them to United States adversaries like Iran or North Korea.
Recently, Ukrainian forces carried out drone attacks against Russian forces along the Dnipro River.
President Zelensky says Russia knows the location of natural resources from Soviet-era geological surveys.
The Ukrainian president says he has also discussed with President Trump the idea of storing United States liquefied natural gas in Ukrainian underground storage facilities.
Kiev faced fresh air strikes as Ukraine's air force said it had shot down nearly half of the 139 drones launched by Russia. No damage or casualties were reported by local officials.
Meanwhile, German lawmakers last year approved a special fund of about $107 billion to strengthen the country's military in response to Russia's war against Ukraine.
The German army currently has around 179,000 troops and according to media reports, Berlin aims to reach 203,000 troops by 2031.
"The situation in Europe has changed because of the war in Ukraine. So now, where entire areas are changing, we need to prepare for a possible future war and we need to replenish our reserves."
World leaders will meet this week at the Munich Security Conference in Germany to discuss, among other topics, support for Ukraine. The talks take place from February 14 to 16./ VOA
