Alarm / 1.6 billion Gmail accounts at risk from hacker attack, bank accounts linked to it could also be affected

Cybersecurity experts are warning all Gmail users about a new hack that defeats two-factor authentication by stealing accounts.
Two-factor authentication is supposed to add a layer of protection to your private online accounts, usually by sending an access code to the legitimate user's phone or email. The new cybercrime tool, called Astaroth, steals these forms of identification in real time, tricking the victim into thinking they've logged in properly by sending them to a fake page that looks like their browser.
Hackers using Astaroth can access usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, banking information, and other important data after the victim logs into their accounts on these fake sites. Once the attackers have your information, they can use it to access your accounts themselves or sell the information on the dark web.
Astaroth sets up a fake Gmail login screen for the victim to access, allowing hackers to copy their private information before passing it on to their real email login screen. Since there are no security warnings on the fake website, victims never know what is happening until it is too late. The only surefire way to avoid a phishing attack is to avoid clicking on the initial suspicious link that the scammers will send to gain access to your accounts.
According to cybersecurity experts, anyone using Gmail, Yahoo, AOL and Microsoft Outlook could be vulnerable to these attacks – meaning over two billion email accounts could fall victim to this scheme. According to IT support services company AAG IT, 3.4 billion spam emails are sent every day. Google alone blocks nearly 100 million phishing emails a day.
