EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has stated that enlargement is a geopolitical imperative for the European Union.
Marta Kos, who is responsible for the accession process of the ten countries applying for EU membership, including Albania, made the comments to the French newspaper " Le Monde ".
She also emphasized that for the first time, they are facing forces that want to see us fail or that are carrying out hybrid attacks against certain candidates like Moldova.
"Between the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the changing attitude of the United States towards the Old Continent and China's ambitions in the Balkans, we must move forward without losing any candidate, because this could weaken us. The Commissioner also highlighted that in 1979, Simone Veil, then the new President of the European Parliament, considered that European countries were faced with three major challenges: that of peace, that of freedom and that of well-being. Kos further said that it seems that only the European dimension is capable of facing these challenges.
"While, since the 1990s, the issue of welfare and prosperity has underpinned the various waves of EU enlargement, since 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine, it is the issue of security, hence once again a priority for peace," Kos said.
