Is technology replacing the university degree?

While a college degree once represented the key to a secure professional future, today it is seen by young people as a relic of the past. Generation Z, more than any other generation, is questioning the real value of higher education – especially in a job market increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence.
A recent report from the employment platform Indeed, conducted in collaboration with Harris Poll, reveals a clear trend: almost half (49%) of young people under the age of 27 believe that their degree has lost value in the face of technologies like ChatGPT and other AI tools.
This perception drops significantly among older generations – only 33% of millennials and 20% of baby boomers share this opinion.
A paradigm shift in the labor market
As companies transform their structures to embrace automation and machine learning, a university degree is no longer enough. Practice, adaptability, and familiarity with digital tools are becoming the new currency in the marketplace.
“Every job advertised on Indeed today is, in one way or another, influenced by artificial intelligence,” says Lynsey Fagan, a talent strategy expert. She emphasizes that for a modern organization, it’s not enough for experts to know AI — every employee needs to have at least a basic understanding of it.
From diplomas to digital certificates
This shift is also indicated by the growing interest in online platforms. Last year alone, enrollment in machine learning and programming courses quadrupled. Tech companies like Google and Microsoft are no longer expecting employees to learn in the traditional way – they are offering their own training to prepare the workforce of tomorrow.
In this context, traditional education is facing an existential challenge: adapt or lose relevance. While some universities are revising their programs to include AI, most remain tied to outdated curricula.
An investment that is being questioned
For many of today's young people, investing several years in college no longer guarantees a secure future. Half of Gen Z respondents see college as a cost without benefit. And this question isn't just financial—it's philosophical: Should the value of education be measured solely by employment potential?
Whatever the answer, one thing is certain – artificial intelligence is no longer just a technological trend, but a factor that is reshaping the entire structure of the labor market and our relationship with knowledge and qualifications.
