Gynecology raises alarm: Sexually transmitted diseases are spreading rapidly, men are not showing up for checkups, many people do not know they are carriers

Sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) have been increasing significantly in recent years in Albania. Gynecologists warn that factors such as frequent changes in partners, early initiation of sexual activity, and lack of protection have directly influenced their spread.
According to Prof. Dr. Afërdita Manaj, a gynecologist, today the most worrying are viral infections such as HIV, human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes condyloma and is linked to cervical cancer, as well as hepatitis B and C. Also, bacterial infections such as syphilis and gonorrhea have increased significantly in recent years.
Manaj emphasizes that syphilis is particularly dangerous, as if not diagnosed and treated in time, it can lead to fatal consequences. The first symptoms appear as hard, painless ulcers, which may disappear temporarily and return after a few months.
Manaj notes that many patients present to the doctor late, often only when symptoms become apparent. Men, she says, appear less frequently for check-ups, while women often come only when complications arise.
"Very few men, boys, come. Women don't come on their own, only when they see obvious signs," she told Vizion Plus.
Although cases are increasing, awareness of STIs remains low. Many people are not aware that they are carriers of any virus. Prof. Dr. Manaj appeals for more awareness, sexual education and regular medical check-ups, especially for those who have more than one sexual partner.
