One of Albania's greatest natural assets, Lake Shkodra, is declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Lake Shkodra has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, an international recognition for one of Albania's greatest natural assets. The classification means the designated area serves as a laboratory for sustainable development.
"This is a moment of pride for Shkodra, for the communities living near the lake and for the extraordinary potential that this territory holds for tourism, the local economy, regional development and increased well-being," writes Mayor Benet Beci.
Lake Shkodra is not only a natural asset, but also identity, history and one of Shkodra's most precious assets.
In Albania, these areas include major natural assets such as the Vjosa Valley (one of the last wild rivers in Europe) and Lake Skadar (in cooperation with Montenegro).
The declaration as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve recognizes Lake Shkodra as a living laboratory for sustainable development, where nature protection, scientific research, and the well-being of local communities go hand in hand.
This status reinforces Albania's commitment to the long-term conservation of natural resources, the involvement of local communities, and the promotion of a development model that respects the environment and natural heritage.
