Tower at the Palace of Congresses, Tabaku denounces: Public property is being treated as personal property! This corrupt system is taking people out on the streets to protest
Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, reacted after the announcement that the list of projects approved by the Albanian Investment Corporation also includes the construction of a tower near the Palace of Congresses, describing this as another example of the way public assets are being administered in the country.
In a video published on social media, Tabaku stated that the debate is not about nostalgia for objects of the past, but about protecting the public interest and how decisions are made about properties belonging to citizens.
According to her, the Investment Corporation has become an institution that operates without control, without audit and without sufficient public transparency, while taking over state properties and deciding on their development without a clear accountability process.
Tabaku argued that the case of the Congress Palace is not isolated, but part of a broader pattern that, according to her, has also been seen in Zvërnec, Vlorë Airport and the Port of Durres. In all these cases, she said, public property is treated as the property of a minority, while citizens remain outside the decision-making process.
The Democratic MP linked this phenomenon to what she described as "the system of concentration of the economy and wealth in a few hands," arguing that the lack of competition, transparency, and meritocracy is harming the country's economic development.
"This is the system that brings people to the streets to protest. The system that concentrates wealth in the minority, makes decisions without accountability, and treats public property as private property. We must change this system," said Tabaku.
She emphasized that Albania needs an open economy, with fair competition and equal rules for all, where public wealth is administered in the interest of citizens and not privileged groups.
Full statement
No nostalgia for old relics of communism, but respect and interest in public property and public wealth.
The Investment Corporation has announced that the tower near the Palace of Congresses has now been added to the long list of over 10 permits it has granted for construction on public property.
The Investment Corporation is one of the most abusive, uncontrolled, unreported and unaudited institutions, which takes public property and issues construction permits.
But who are these people who treat public property as if it were their own? Who are these people who act without accountability, who make decisions without any transparency?
Massive construction is taking place on public property and no one knows what is happening.
The same situation is in Zvërnec. The same situation is in Vlorë Airport. The same situation is in the Port of Durrës, where public property is treated as personal property, where there is no transparent decision-making and there is no broad consultation with public opinion.
This system is precisely the system that brings people out into the streets to protest. It is the system that has brought about the concentration of the economy in a few hands and the most abusive form of decision-making that Albania has known.
It is a system that has concentrated wealth in the hands of a few. A system that makes decisions without accountability. A system that treats public property as private property.
We must change this system. We must remove this system for Albania.
For the country to have an open economy, to have competition and, at the end of the day, to have meritocracy in the economy as well.
