New EU rules on liquids on planes increase chaos and costs for travelers

Just days after the European Union's decision to allow up to two liters of liquids in hand luggage, travelers are faced with another concern: high additional prices for their transportation.

The Italian consumer protection association, Assoutenti, warns that the lack of clarity and different implementation of the rule across airports could cost passengers up to 130 euros.

According to Assoutenti, European airports do not have a unified approach.

Although new scanners that allow the secure control of liquids in bottles over 100 ml have been installed at several airports such as Milan Malpensa, Linate, Rome Fiumicino, Bologna and Turin, some of these have not yet implemented the new rule.

Passengers, unclear about the regulations that apply at each airport, are often forced to hand over their hand luggage to the baggage hold at the last minute, at exorbitant fees.

Fares range from 35 to 75 euros for Ryanair, up to 70 euros for WizzAir, 65 euros for Easyjet and up to 130 euros for international flights with ITA Airways.

"This is a situation of total chaos that could weigh heavily on passengers' pockets," said Assoutenti president Gabriele Melluso.

He asked the Italian civil aviation authority, ENAC, to publish an updated list of airports that allow the transport of liquids over 100 ml in hand luggage, to avoid surprises and unexpected costs.

In the absence of a common standard across the EU, travelers are advised to inform themselves in advance about the rules that apply at the departure and arrival airports, to avoid losing products or incurring additional charges during the summer holidays.
