How family absence, school failure, and community deformation are producing vulnerable generations
The silent crisis that erupted into violence among 15-year-olds
The incident of the rape of a 15-year-old boy in Durrës by his peer is not an isolated tragedy. It is the culmination of a long chain of social failures. None of these events arise in a vacuum. They are the product of a reality where the family, school and community have lost their basic functions, creating a terrain where violence, indifference and lack of responsibility grow unhindered.
The family, the first institution in education, is in crisis and under pressure more than ever.
Mass immigration has fragmented its structure: parents physically separated from their children, grandparents forced to take on the role of parent, children growing up amidst anxiety and lack of supervision. Economic difficulties have reduced the quality of the parent-child relationship, while parenting education is almost completely absent. Technology often replaces emotional presence and in this vacuum children look for models outside the family, often dangerous models.
The school has become a paralyzed and politicized institution.
Once a center of discipline and order, the school has today become a weakened and mismanaged institution. The school has been facing the same problems for years, with no real solution: overcrowded classrooms, often beyond any pedagogical and safety standards; lack of ventilation, hygiene and basic conditions that directly affect the well-being and concentration of children; weak teachers, not well-trained and without the necessary professional support (PISA 2022); lack of teaching aids, laboratories, digital infrastructure; lack of security officers and psychologists, creating spaces where bullying, violence and deviance flourish (KLSH 2025); wrong student distribution policies, which force children to move away from their neighborhoods for “better schools”, often without supervision and in unsafe circumstances.
In this reality, school is no longer a safe place for a good education, but an environment where children are exposed to danger.
The community around the school has been deformed, creating a dangerous social void.
Traditionally, it has been a security filter. Neighbors knew each other, parents collaborated, the school was at the heart of the neighborhood. Today, this connection has been severed. The community has been physically displaced and society has been atomized. Children move to areas where no one knows them and no one is responsible for them.
The weakening of the family and the school has left room for parallel and uncontrolled education through society and social networks.
Children learn from their friends and the internet what their parents or school don't teach them. Violence, arrogance, dominance and cynicism on the internet are often rewarded and often modeled after them. Algorithms don't educate, they amplify the basest instincts, posing a serious risk to children.
Because we have built a culture where: rules are not enforced; violations are not punished; responsibility is lost among institutions; parents do not receive support and parenting training; teachers are weak, tired and defenseless; institutions treat violence as a statistic, not as an alarm.
Children are not to blame and are not “worse” than before. The system around them is weaker, more dispersed and more irresponsible because the state and responsible institutions are missing.
The injury of the 15-year-old is a symptom of a deep social crisis.
If we do not act now, violence will increase, communities will further disintegrate, school will lose its meaning, and society will produce vulnerable and disoriented generations.
Returning the school to the center of the community and allowing children to attend the nearest school, within a 15-minute walk; reducing unnecessary transportation and increasing monitoring of children; deploying security officers and trained psychologists; training for parents and education and orientation programs for adolescents; depoliticizing the school, standardizing the quality of teaching and management; supported and professional teachers; introducing discipline, behavior, communication, coexistence and empathy into the curriculum.
Albania urgently needs to return the family, school and community to the center of the social project.
Because only there can any real change begin.
