The shrinking population reduces the number of workers and fashion factories, as

Clothing and footwear manufacturing factories shrank in number and in employees during 2021 compared to previous years due to the problems that the lack of employees is creating.

The official data of INSTAT shows that the number of enterprises in the fashion sector reached 783 during the year 2021 from 907 that were in the pandemic year 2020.

The number of businesses in the fashion sector shrank by 3% compared to 2020 and 16% compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019. Their number peaked in 2016 with 1189 factories.

Sources from the sector claim that demographic developments have put the fashion sector in difficulty. The decline in births, the emigration of young people and the increase in competition in the domestic labor market are leading to bankruptcy of small factories. Some small producers went bankrupt during the pandemic year 2020, as they did not survive the first months of the lockdown, while the big ones had the opportunity to diversify production in adaptation to the pandemic.

As the factories shrink, the number of employees in the sector is also shrinking. In 2021, there were 54,036 salaried employees across the industry with an annual decrease of over 7% compared to 2020.

Almost all factories produce for the average level of the European market, as they are targeting customers above this level and diversifying, but the sector is still highly dependent on the Italian market.

The war in Ukraine was another chance for industry. Many European companies, which previously produced there, began to look for other countries in Europe to relocate production, and Albania became attractive due to its geographical proximity and still low production costs. But restrictions on employees are preventing expansion from the transfer of production chains./Monitor
