Norwegian fined for disturbing polar bear's sleep

A man has been fined 50,000 kroner (4,560 euros) for using a horn to wake a sleeping polar bear on Norway's Svalbard archipelago, a local official announced.

The incident occurred earlier this month after someone raised the alarm from a ship sailing in a fjord in the northwestern part of Svalbard, about 1,000 kilometers from the North Pole, BBC television reports.

An unnamed person was fined 50,000 kronor for the incident, the territory's governor confirmed. According to local regulations, "it is prohibited to unnecessarily disturb, attract the attention of or pursue a polar bear," an animal that was declared a protected species in Svalbard in 1972.

About 250 polar bears were counted in the archipelago during the last scientific assessment, conducted in 2015. In a statement, Governor Lars Fause said that when the ship sailed near the animal, "its passengers reportedly saw a polar bear sleeping on the ground."

"A person on the boat then used her horn, waking the animal, which went to another place," he added. The person fined has reportedly agreed to pay the fine.
