May 11, the referendum on the end of Berisheism

The victory of the Socialist Party on May 11, which is projected to win up to 83 mandates, is undoubtedly in a percentage that is bad for Albanian democracy, seeing as a single party gets its fourth consecutive mandate with an almost 3/5 majority. And for a country like Albania, with an unconsolidated democracy, it is difficult to cope with such a large accumulation of power.

In fact, more than a victory for the Socialist Party in these elections, it seems like there is a profound loss for the opposition, the Democratic Party and especially Sali Berisha. The biggest loss in its history of transition since '97.

May 11th looks like a referendum on the end of Berishaism; this is as clear as daylight. The end of Berishaism, with all that Berishaism represents, means the end as a majority. In the sense that Sali Berisha cannot be a majority in Albanian society. Of course, he can continue to have a certain percentage of the Democratic Party. There may still be people who will still follow him after this catastrophic defeat, and there will be, but he can no longer be a governing alternative for Albanians. Albanians confirmed this on Sunday. Whoever finds other arguments either does not understand the truth of these elections or will not say it.

In fact, the end of Berishaism as a majority in Albania was first understood by Sali Berisha himself in 2013 when he lost by a million votes. It was not in vain that he left the Democratic Party, appointing a new leader like Lulzim Basha. Berisha did not leave the party leadership in 2013 for a democratic gesture or political responsibility, but because he was the first to understand that he could no longer be a majority in Albania. The only way for him to stay in power was to resign, control the DP and aim for a return through Lulzim Basha. And he almost carried out the most ingenious political operation in Albania. Lulzim Basha in 2021 and the opposition were very close to victory, but Berisha did not foresee the Justice Reform, the surrender of mandates, the boycott of local elections, and the conflict with the Americans and all the events that resulted from this conflict, which undoubtedly played a role in blocking the rotation in Albania. It seems paradoxical, but Lulzim Basha risks going down in history as the last leader of the Democratic Party to receive the most votes. And this entire ingenious operation was almost rewarded by Albanian citizens in 2021, which was apparently the last chance for Berisha to return to power.

The second person who knows full well that Berisha's rule as a majority in Albania has come to an end for a long time is Edi Rama. Not for nothing, he turned the entire electoral campaign into a referendum between himself and Sali Berisha. And the Albanians, between Berisha and Rama, clearly chose the latter. Not only that, but Edi Rama has sought and nurtured the competition and rivalry with Sali Berisha in the last four years because he knows very well that Sali Berisha can no longer be a majority in Albania, and he was rewarded for this strategy on Sunday.
This is the political essence of the results of the May 11 elections. Sali Berisha has only had the votes of his militants for many years and cannot get any votes beyond them. There is a certain percentage that helps him not to leave politics, but never to win again, thus blocking the reform of the opposition and the rotation in Albania.

However, whoever thinks that Sali Berisha has lost is wrong. Berisha, with the minimum of conditions, got the maximum result. Berisha managed to return, take over the Democratic Party and own it. He now has 50 deputies and still continues to be a political factor, and with the Democratic Party he can do whatever he wants, even inherit it. He was aware, unlike those who follow him, of how far the DP could reach under his leadership, and he achieved this goal. Berisha won, but the question is whether the Democrats, who see themselves in opposition for 14 years, won! The sacrifices they made to rehabilitate Berisha, the energies they focused all on this, brought them a very high political cost! It brought them the fourth mandate of Edi Rama.
