Reason loses its compass: science, narcissism, and the temptation of conspiracy

I wrote a few weeks ago (October 6, 2025) about this. But I decided to focus even more on a disturbingly common phenomenon of the times we are living in. CONSPIRACY. I decided to write again after listening to an interview with a colleague of mine, brilliant in his specialty but .....
We live in an age of doubt. We live in a time when information is unlimited, but faith is in crisis. Instead of a world more enlightened by knowledge, we have a universe overflowing with voices, where every truth has a counter-truth, and every fact a counter-fact. This is an age where science is no longer denied by ignorance, but often by those who claim to be protecting it from itself.
In this fog of “truths,” the figure of the “man who knows the hidden truth” acquires a new magnetism. The plot becomes the mythic structure through which modern man attempts to regain a sense of meaning in a disintegrating universe.
Science was born as an attempt to impose order on chaos. But when it itself faces uncertainty, such as during pandemics, environmental crises, or giant technological breakthroughs, scientists face a kind of existential uncertainty: what happens when the tool that makes them feel powerful no longer offers certainty?
Instead of epistemic humility, an opposite reaction begins and arises: the search for the “hidden order” that lies behind all contradictions. Thus arises the dangerous slide from critical thinking to conspiratorial thinking, an invisible transformation that does not occur from a lack of intelligence, but from the need to maintain control over meaning.
Skepticism is one of the fundamental virtues of scientific thought. But the moment doubt no longer serves to build knowledge but to undermine the very possibility of truth, it turns into a form of paranoia.
At this point, the “question,” which is the traditional food of scientific progress, no longer seeks an answer but confirmation of fear. And the greatest fear is not that the world is incomprehensible, but that someone else is secretly controlling it. Thus is born the conspiracy: a modern myth that replaces God with “the system,” and sin with “global manipulation.”
Populist movements, digital forums, and social networks have created emotional communities based on suspicion and opposition. Unfortunately, in my opinion, we have reached a stage where faith is required instead of argument, and belonging instead of evidence.
In this context, conspiracy is no longer an individual deviation, but is increasingly becoming a new form of collective identity. It offers people something that the modern world has robbed them of: a sense of belonging, a clear enemy, and a cause that elevates them above the “manipulated crowd.”
On a psychological level, conspiracy is a protective structure against existential anxiety. Instead of facing the uncertainty of life, the individual projects it onto an “external force”.
In terms of the psyche, this is a moment of separation between the grandiose self and the fearful self: “I am the one who sees further” and “The world punishes me for seeing”. Two poles that feed each other: narcissism and victimization.
In this duality, conspiracy is not simply a belief but a narcissistic structure of salvation, where the ego recreates the world in order not to face the inner emptiness.
In the end, we are no longer dealing with a battle between knowledge and ignorance, but with a nostalgia for the “certain” truth. People do not deny science because they do not understand it, but because they can no longer bear the uncertainty it demands.
Instead of open inquiry, we seek the comfortable conclusion. Instead of thought, we seek the community of conviction. And so, reason loses its compass, not because it is destroyed, but because it becomes the servant of fear.
Ultimately, I think that every man who seeks a conspiracy seeks to find his own meaning in a world that has lost it. But, as Jung or Frankl might say, man does not go mad from truth but from the absence of it.
