Two Albanian models in the Council of Europe: Patriotism versus personal

The Council of Europe is one of the most important international forums for democracy, human rights and the rule of law. In this forum, Albania has had and still has different representatives, but today more than ever, two Albanian political figures represent two diametrically opposed models: Lulzim Basha and Sali Berisha.

Lulzim Basha – The Voice of Kosovo and the Shield of Euro-Atlantic Values

As a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Lulzim Basha has chosen to be the true voice of the national interest. He stood out as a model of a politician who puts the interest of Kosovo above the political calculations of the day. His clear and firm stance on Kosovo's admission to the CoE, its international recognition, and the condemnation of the terrorist act of Bajnska are proof of his unwavering commitment to justice and national dignity.

Beyond the Albanian issue, Basha showed vision and leadership in global issues as well. His proposed resolution on the confiscation of Russian assets as a result of the aggression against Ukraine, approved by a large majority, transformed him into one of the most active figures of the Euro-Atlantic wing within the Council of Europe. This is the model of an Albanian who defends democracy, peace and justice, not only for his own nation, but also for the entire continent.

Sali Berisha – From the voice of the right, to his own advocate

In stark contrast, the figure of Sali Berisha today in the Council of Europe is a shadow of what he once was. From a powerful politician, he has turned into a man mired in personal troubles with justice, declared non grata by the US and the UK for major corruption. Berisha no longer represents the interests of Albanians, but is busy with the battle to protect himself. In the Council of Europe he spoke about his problems, his family and his allies with justice, a justice raised by Europeans and Americans and appreciated by them precisely because of the punishment of Berisha and his friends.

For his arrogance, he took the opposition hostage, shamed the Democrats, and appeared desperate for his fate.

Instead of being a voice for Kosovo or for European values, he has chosen to lead a personal political battle, turning Albanian representation in the Council of Europe into a theater for his own interests and not those of the citizens who once supported him.

Two roads, two destinations

One chooses to build trust for Albania and Kosovo in the eyes of the Western world. The other tries to avoid the consequences of his political legacy.

At a time when Albania needs worthy representation at international tables, these two models are a clear reminder that the DP today is a shield for the troubles of an individual, while under the leadership of Lulzim Basha, it showed vision, responsibility and service.
