For more than two months, thousands of Albanian citizens have been protesting against luxury projects linked to the Trump family, but also against the failure of the Rama government's social policies. Behind the revolt lie poverty, corruption, mass emigration and the feeling that the country's sovereignty is being put up for sale...
For 65 consecutive days, Albanians have been taking to the streets. They protest day and night, in temperatures of 40 degrees, but also in the rain. Arrests have begun in Tirana. The police have set up a double cordon around the parliament and those who try to break through are escorted by police vehicles, who then become the target of eggs and vegetables being thrown.
However, the police are not considered the enemy. On the contrary, the protesters remind the officers that the "thieves and criminals" are inside the institutions and not among the people marching for a more just Albania.
This proud land, unfortunately accustomed to various forms of oppression, had never before witnessed such great perseverance. There are elderly people lying down on the streets to block traffic, families with baby carriages, professionals leaving their offices in Bllok, the area that during the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha was reserved for the nomenclature of the Party of Labor and which today is the heart of urban life in the capital.
Students, environmentalists and the unemployed also participate in the protests. The square is extremely diverse, as are the reasons for the revolt. The green light given by Edi Rama, Albania's prime minister for 13 years, to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, the daughter of the US president, for the construction of luxury resorts on the island of Sazan and on the pristine beaches of Zvërnec, was just the spark that ignited everything.
But the 'explosive material' had been accumulating over the years and consisted of poverty, corruption, a collapsing health system, social inequality and the almost complete absence of a middle class. Young people are leaving and the cradles are emptying. From 2001 to 2023, the birth rate has halved, falling from 2.13 children per couple to 1.21. Those who can afford it are emigrating to Italy, Germany and Austria.
Among the protesters are also those who believe that immigration is part of a strategy of the government itself: fewer Albanians and more wealthy foreigners to enjoy the "Land of the Eagles."
Kushner discovered Sazan in 2021, when he sailed around the island on board the yacht of Nat Rothschild, the financier and member of the famous banking family. Sazan is a place of great strategic importance. For this reason, it has been occupied over the centuries by the Romans, Venetians, Ottomans, the Kingdom of Italy, the Nazis and the Soviets, who, during the Cold War, established a submarine base there.
Only 70 nautical miles separate Sazan from Otranto, and these days, control of the straits seems to have taken on even greater importance than the possession of nuclear weapons. Kushner is not just an entrepreneur. He is Donald Trump's special envoy for the Middle East, does business with the Persian Gulf monarchies and Israel, owns interests in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and is the man who presented the plan for the "New Gaza," a project to build luxury resorts on the ruins of war.
In the Jeffrey Epstein files, he is described by an FBI source as “the real mastermind behind Trump.” In 2021, Alan Dershowitz, a lawyer for Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, nominated Kushner for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the Abraham Accords.
These deals were supported by the Arab monarchies, which are also the main financiers of Affinity Partners, the investment company that will build and manage the resorts in Albania. Edi Rama first spoke with Kushner about this project on the Rothschild yacht. This fact is considered embarrassing for the leader of the Socialist Party and the son of Kristaq Rama, the famous deputy of the communist period and Enver Hoxha's trusted sculptor.
Meanwhile, Affinity Partners has recently invested in Phoenix Financial, an Israeli financial giant that owns shares in Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest arms manufacturer. Young Albanians are aware of this and a significant part of Albanian society publicly supports the Palestinian cause. The fact that foreign politicians and businessmen could control one of the banks of the Otranto Canal, a key point for the passage of gas, for decades should also worry the Italian political class.
In Albania, there are protests for the economy, for the environment, against the government of Edi Rama and the opposition of Sali Berisha, which are seen as two sides of the same coin.
But, above all, they are protesting for the sovereignty of a country whose citizens want to live and build a future on their land, just like the flamingos and the curly pelican, which, according to the protesters, are threatened by the Trump family's projects and by a savage capitalist system, disguised as social democracy, that pushes young people to leave and the elderly to feel nostalgia even for the dark years of communism. / "Il Fatto Quotidiano"
