Woman forced to pay entire $1 million lottery win to ex-husband, accused of

A woman has lost all of her lottery winnings after she tried to avoid her 'big win' liability.

She was forced to pay the $1 million profit to her ex-husband, whom she was divorcing.

Denise Rossi, from California, USA, had decided to divorce her husband of 25 years just two weeks after winning the lottery, which she kept a secret.

She received the prize of more than 1 million but decided she wanted to keep it for herself and not share it with her partner.

Her ex-husband Thomas found out about the lottery only a few years after their divorce in 1996, when he found out about lottery payments being sent to him by the company.

So he took the case to court, where it was discovered that Denise had sent the winnings to her mother's address so Thomas wouldn't find out.

The woman was asked why she had asked for a divorce so soon after the victory, but she answered that it was something she had wanted for several years.

Speaking to People Magazine, Thomas said he was surprised by the incident: “She asked me to get out of the house, and as soon as possible. She never acted like this," writes the Mirror network.

But the judge ordered Denise to pay her 65-year-old husband 20 annual payments of $66,800 each, which is more than her lottery winnings.

Denise's lawyer, Connolly Oyler, said she could have kept the winnings if she had been honest.

"She could have argued that it was her separate property, or they could have discussed and come to an agreement, but the judge got angry at the woman's behavior and gave it all to the man," Oyler said, according to local media.
