Underwater pioneer dies at 76

The pioneer of the underwater world, Thoma Berberi, passes away.
Thoma Berberi, known as one of the pioneers of underwater activities in Albania, passed away this Saturday at the age of 76.
Berberi was among the first to lay the foundations of diving and exploration of the sea depths in the country, at a time when these activities were almost unknown. With passion and perseverance, he managed to build the first Albanian bathyscaphe, a rare achievement for the time and conditions in which it was realized.
In this difficult undertaking, he was not alone. His brothers became part of this project, contributing to the realization of one of the most important tools for underwater research in the country.
His work did not go unnoticed internationally. For the construction of the bathyscaphe, Berberi received recognition from the renowned deep-sea explorer, Jacques Piccard.
Thanks to this tool and his dedication, the first steps were taken in documenting the Albanian underwater world, including valuable research in the field of underwater archaeology.
With his passing, the country loses a pioneer and a rare enthusiast for the underwater world.
