The feast of Sultan Nevruz, the day of hope and resurrection for Bektash

Today Bektashi believers celebrate Sultan Nowruz Day, the birthday of the great Imam Ali.

The Sultan Nowruz holiday marks the beginning of the new year, according to the Bektashi sect, and coincides with the birthday of Imam Ali at the Kaaba.

This day is regarded throughout the Alevi world as the day of Bektashi nobility and the day of the great resurrection. On this day everything can be resurrected, hope is born, resurrection for all humanity. It is a new day, when everyone hopes for a better future.

In Albania, Sultan Nowruz Day, the most important holiday of Bektashism, was decreed as a national holiday in 1996.

In our country, the Bektashi sect is located mainly in the south of the country, while it has a considerable extent in the territory of the Republic of Albania.

The Bektashis are widespread in Kosovo and Macedonia, where, along with the Sunnis, they constitute the Albanian population of the Muslim faith.

Representatives of Bektashism have given great help in the national cause, starting from the period of National Renaissance, Independence and during the Liberation War.

Bektashism is an Islamic religious order with its own and distinct philosophical theory. It was created in Anatolia in the 14th century and got this name from its founder Haxhi Bektash Beliu. In Albania, Bektashism penetrated with the Ottoman occupation in towns and garrison centers such as Krujë, Elbasan, Gjirokastër, Tepelën, Frashër, etc.

According to historical sources, Bektashiism gained wide spread among the Albanian population dissatisfied with the centralizing reforms of the High Gate, as the Bektashi clergy supported the popular movements against the Ottoman power, as well as used the Albanian language for a literature of its own.

During the National Renaissance, the Bektashis supported the struggle for freedom and the national language, among them the activists Baba Alushi i Frashëri and Baba Hyseni i Melçani.

A number of their villages were transformed into centers of the national movement. After the Lushnja Congress, Bektashism was officially recognized as an independent religious community. In 1924, the World headquarters of Bektashism was moved from Anatolia to Tirana. Forced by the communist regime, Bektashism, as part of the religious ideology, ceased its activity in 1967, only to resume it again in 1991.

Rites of the Sultan Nowruz holiday

In honor of this day, housewives make a special pie for this day, as 12 different types of cabbage leaves and a metal coin are put into the dish.

At dinner for the family members, the pie is brought out, which is divided into as many parts as there are members. Before starting to choose the parts, the hostess prays for the fortunes of the family members and then everyone chooses their own part. The one who finds the coin (lek) must definitely buy a kilogram of salt for the house, as it predicts a good year.

As this rite ends, Bektashi families distribute a part of the pie among Christian families as a sign of respect.
