Drug cartels are the fifth largest "employer" in Mexico

Organized crime groups in Mexico have about 175,000 members and are the fifth largest employer in the country, research shows.

The scientists, who published research in the journal Science, used 10 years of data on murders, missing persons and incarcerations, as well as information on rival gang relationships.

The best way to reduce the bleeding, they argue, would be to reduce cartel recruitment. Imprisoning more members would actually increase the murder rate.

As for the profile of the members, the researchers point out that it includes young people from the working class who are recruited by the cartels as armed men (sicario), up to former members of the Police or Armed Forces from South American countries.

The number of murders in Mexico tripled between 2007 and 2021, the Guardian reports, the government announced that 34,000 victims were recorded. Almost 27 victims for every 100,000 inhabitants, Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in Latin America.

In Mexico, there are two major rival gangs, the Sinaloa cartel and the Jalisco New Generation cartel. The researchers identified 198 other groups that are somewhat more separate from the big two and also take on local disputes.

However, other researchers express doubts about what we define as "cartel member". Cartel members include politicians financed by the cartel or thugs who cooperate although once, not all members are involved in violent activities.
