"Kosovo meets the criteria", Osmani: NATO membership more urgent than EU membership

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, in a statement to the media in Belgrade, emphasized that for Kosovo, NATO membership is much more important and urgent than integration into the European Union.
Osmani adds that Kosovo's membership in NATO creates more security in the country.
"I see NATO as more urgent than European integration. The EU will take time, even after we receive candidate country status. I believe that NATO is more important for the region at this moment. For us, being in NATO means being safe ," Osmani said.
She emphasized that Russia has long-term plans and interests in destabilizing the Balkans, raising the need for a stronger presence of the North Atlantic alliance in the region.
"I believe it is in NATO's strategic interest to expand into the Western Balkans, especially in Kosovo and Bosnia ," the president said.
Osmani expressed her conviction that Kosovo already meets the basic criteria to become part of NATO.
"Our army is built and trained according to NATO standards. There is a lot of interaction that is already taking place. We already spend more than 2% of the budget on defense, which is a NATO criterion. Within four years, we plan to double the defense budget and reach spending up to 4% of GDP ," Osmani emphasized.
The President underlined that NATO membership would be a vital guarantee for Kosovo's security and the stability of the region.
