Kurti on the re-election of Vjosa Osmani: If the president is not elected by

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, whose term ends in March, has officially requested support to once again lead the country, but Albin Kurti says there is a possibility that the country will go to elections again.

" If we fail to elect the president, or re-elect the president, and the deadline for this is March 4, if we do not have the budget for 2026 passed in advance, we cannot even hold new elections. Of course, there is the possibility, not only theoretical, but also practical, that we will go to the elections again, if we fail to re-elect the president. But in such a situation, we must be ready, precisely by having the budget voted. That is why I am saying, it is not healthy to talk about the fourth step without properly addressing and passing these first three," said Albin Kurti.

Kurti thus sends a message to Osmani, who during the election campaign was accused by opposition parties of supporting VV by setting the election date for December 28.

According to the opposition, this favored Kurti by giving the diaspora the opportunity to vote for him.

However, Kurti states that a test and indication of how to move forward on the issue of the president is the approval of international agreements, which also require the support of opposition MPs.

Initially, it is necessary to constitute the Assembly, form the government, approve the budget, and then think about the issue of electing the president.

"Now, we have seen the president's statement. First, we must form the Assembly and the government. We must also vote on the budget. I believe that these are the most important steps. So, there are three steps before we come to the re-election of the president. And I believe that from these three steps we will see what the prospects are ahead. I have stated that it is important that we also sit down with the president and discuss all things. This meeting is needed because 80 people in the hall is a considerable difficulty," Kurti added.

The election of a new head of state for a 5-year term is another political challenge for Kosovo.

The President of the Republic of Kosovo is elected by the Assembly, by secret ballot.

His election shall be held no later than thirty (30) days before the end of the term of the current President. The election shall be held by a two-thirds (2/3) majority of all members of the Assembly.

If no candidate receives a two-thirds (2/3) majority in the first two ballots, a third ballot shall be organized between the two candidates who received the highest number of votes in the second ballot, and the candidate who receives the majority of votes of all deputies shall be elected President of the Republic of Kosovo.

If in the third vote, no candidate is elected President of the Republic of Kosovo, the Assembly is dissolved and new elections are announced, which must be held within forty-five days.
