"Peoples can self-determine"/ Russia "recognizes" Kosovo, Vladimir Putin accepts the decision of the UN court

Russia indirectly recognizes Kosovo's independence. Or, more precisely, President Vladimir Putin recognizes the decision of the International Court of Justice that legalized independence, only to justify the annexation of Donetsk and Luhansk from Ukraine, as well as to attack the West.
During a conversation with international journalists in the Kremlin, the Russian leader attempts to change the narrative that he was the one who started the war, citing international law and the UN Charter on the right of peoples to self-determination.
"Was this part of the country obliged to seek permission from the central authorities, from Kiev, or not? No. There is a decision of the International Court of Justice, according to which this was a precedent set by Kosovo. The International Court of Justice expressly stated: if a part of the country makes a decision to secede, it is not obliged to seek the consent of the central authorities on this issue. That's it," Putin said.
He even goes so far as to play the victim, saying that for 8 years he did not recognize the independence of Donbass, because according to him, he wanted an agreement with Ukraine. In the end, he claims that he was forced to accept independence and send the army to the region to help. But again, he draws parallels with the case of Kosovo.
"And when I talk about the Kosovo precedent, I remember what happened then. Then the countries of Western Europe and the United States put quite serious pressure on the UN court - and it made this decision: when a part is divided, that part is not obliged to turn to the central authorities for consent. That's it! Do you understand? They did everything with their own hands. And then they say: 'How could you?' That's it. You are allowed, but others are not? It cannot be like that. The rules must be equal. Only in this way can they be stable, and this is a guarantee of security for everyone, and not at the expense of others," Putin added.
This is the first time that Russia, or a senior Russian official, has acknowledged the International Court of Justice's decision as legal and fair.
