Kosovo Special Prosecution files indictment against one person for war crimes in Istog

The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office has filed an indictment against a person suspected of committing the crime of “war crime against the civilian population” in the municipality of Istog. According to the indictment, during the war in Kosovo in the village of Cerrcë and surrounding villages in Istog, TP, together with other members of the Serbian forces, “committed murder, looting and destruction of property of Albanian civilians.”

TP, of Serbian nationality, was arrested on September 12, 2024. He is accused of having participated in the murder of five members of a family in April 1999. “The victims KR, ZR, RR, I. R and Sh.R., under threat of weapons, were forced to leave their home and moved to another house, where they were later killed. According to the indictment, the house, together with the bodies of the victims, was burned,” the Prosecution said in a statement.

In addition to murder, TP is accused of stealing movable property and then burning down houses in villages in this municipality. Recently, the Special Prosecution Office has filed several charges for crimes committed during the 1998-99 war.

In August, it filed an indictment in absentia against 21 suspects in the forcible expulsion of more than 800,000 Albanian civilians from Kosovo during the war. Since the end of the war, dozens of people have been convicted of war crimes before domestic and international institutions.

From 2000 to 2008, war crimes in Kosovo were investigated by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), and from 2008, by the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX). In 2018, EULEX handed over the cases to the Kosovo Prosecutor's Office and local courts.

During the last war in Kosovo in 1998-1999, more than 13,000 civilians were killed and thousands more disappeared. Nearly 1,600 people are still missing - most of them Albanians./REL
