Why the sea foamed after extreme weather in Crete

The sea in Crete is filled with a type of white sand, after the extreme weather that claimed the lives of two people. In some places on the coast of Crete, the foam takes on a brown color as it mixes with the large amount of mud.
Media in the country, citing experts, say that the phenomenon is the result of the large amount of mud that ended up in the sea after the rains. The mud also transported nutrients to the sea, causing these nutrients to cause an intense growth of planktonic microorganisms, which, as products of their metabolism, release proteins and other organic compounds.
All these factors, according to experts, also cause the phenomenon of foaming (the same as when we beat the egg white, which is a protein). The phenomenon is neither dangerous nor poisonous, but samples will still be taken and analyzes will be performed .
