The election of Justina Shiroka-Pula as President of Kosovo has caught the attention of the international news agency Reuters.

Reuters reports that Shiroka-Pula received 81 votes in the 120-member Kosovo Assembly, just one vote more than the majority needed for her election.

The agency emphasizes that failure to elect a president would lead the country towards early parliamentary elections.

After the election, Shiroka-Pula declared that her mandate belongs to all citizens of Kosovo.

" I will be the president of all citizens ," she is quoted as saying.

Reuters links her choice to the political agreement between Prime Minister Albin Kurti's Vetevendosje Movement and the Democratic Party of Kosovo, which also included changes to the Law on the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

The article also mentions the protests that took place on Monday, during which Kosovo Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters who were demanding the limitation of the powers of the Specialized Chambers.

Reuters also recalls the September 16 verdict against former President Hashim Thaçi and three other former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

The agency describes the position of president in Kosovo as largely ceremonial, while emphasizing that the election of the head of state has in the past been a source of political instability.

Shiroka-Pula is described by Reuters as an economist, professor of economics and president of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts.
