The secret origin of Coca-Cola

Six years before Coca Cola was born, three Spaniards created a similar syrup, Nuez de Kola Coke. As the BBC explains, the alcoholic drink had a similar but more concentrated taste, a similar color and used kola nuts and coca leaves from Peru as the main ingredients.
The story dates back to 1880, when Bautista Aparici, Ricardo Sanz and Enrique Ortiz made the drink which was labeled as syrup by the Aielo distillery. This distillery supplied its products to the Royal Household and received several awards for the originality of its drinks. For example, the distillery participated in the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889 (when the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated) and in a drinking competition in Philadelphia in 1885. A year later, the creator of Coca Cola, the American pharmacist John Pemberton, managed to make Coca- Cola in his lab, according to the beverage's website.
"The unique flavor that characterizes Coca-Cola was achieved in 1886 in Pemberton's laboratory, where the chemist mixed natural ingredients such as the leaves of the coca plant, kola nuts and sparkling water," the website says.
