Scientists discover drug that makes human blood deadly to mosquitoes

Scientists have discovered that nitisinone, a drug approved to treat rare genetic disorders, can make human blood deadly to mosquitoes.

According to a study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, mosquitoes that fed on the blood of people who had taken nitisinone died within 12 hours.

Nitisinone works by blocking an enzyme needed for blood digestion in mosquitoes, preventing them from properly processing their food and causing their rapid death.

This discovery offers a promising opportunity for controlling mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria, which causes over 600,000 deaths per year.

Nitisinone has a longer effect on the human body compared to other drugs, such as ivermectin, and is effective even against insecticide-resistant mosquitoes.

However, further research is needed to assess the ecological impact and to ensure that the use of nitisinone will not lead to the development of resistance in mosquitoes.
