Three species of titmouse discovered, enjoy a rare feature

Scientists have recently described three extraordinary species of tree nymphs that have a unique way of laying eggs. Females lay eggs on the ground, from which dozens of tiny nymphs, just a few millimeters long, emerge.
Birth of young that bypasses the egg-laying and larval stages is very rare in amphibians. Of the over 4,000 species of frogs and toads, less than 1% give birth to live young. This strategy may have evolved as an adaptation to the water-scarce habitats in which these amphibians lay their eggs.
The three species of tree toad in Tanzania were previously classified as a single species: Nectophrynoides viviparus. When scientists analyzed the physical characteristics and genetic data of hundreds of species in museums, along with vocal recordings of the toads in their habitats, they concluded that the three toads were different species of the Nectophrynoides genus.
For them, this provides a broader picture of the diversity of tree nymphs that give birth to live young and could help conserve them. Some wild populations of Nectophrynoides are in decline and smaller species are vulnerable to deforestation and the climate crisis, the study says.
Waterfowl that breed in water can lay up to 20,000 eggs in some cases. The birth of live young reduces the numbers to many times less, 40-60 chicks.
The larger and more developed the newborn is, the greater the advantage it has in surviving when it hatches from the egg or is born.
